L'article analyse les fondements du renouveau religieux de la seconde moitié du XIX e siècle. S'agit-il d'un « réveil » au sens de changement rapide? S'agit-il plutôt d'un lent processus d'acculturation qui accompagne la montée de l'influence sociale de l'Église? Après un exposé des thèses en présence, je plaide en faveur d'un lent processus et propose une chronologie de sa réalisation. L'argumentation repose sur mes recherches antérieures qui ont mis en évidence la relation entre l'évolution de la pratique pascale et le resserrement de l'encadrement au sein des institutions paroissiales. Ici, en approfondissant cette perspective, je me suis démandé si les procès pour dîme et dettes intentés par les curés et les fabriques du diocèse de Trois-Rivières ont pu compter parmi les moyens mis en oeuvre pour obtenir une plus grande fidélité aux pratiques prescrites par l'Église.
