Les romans de Catherine Colomb sont, d'une façon comparable à ceux de Proust, des romans de la mémoire. Il sont par ailleurs d'une audace formelle qui n'est pas sans évoquer le Nouveau Roman. Le style, calqué sur les associations d'idées, rend particulièrement difficile le rétablissement de la chronologie. Il y a pourtant un jalon qui, une fois identifié, permet de retracer une certaine linéarité. L'auteure de cet article repère un motif de Châteaux en enfance , apparemment l'un des plus extérieurs à l'intrigue, et observe qu'il apparaît régulièrement dans les moments importants de l'histoire et se modifie selon les circonstances. Ces transformations sont assimilables au travail de la remémoration : le passé est continuellement retranscrit en fonction de ce qui l'évoque dans le présent.
