Abstract
Le 14 juin 1800, alors que l’armée commandée par le Premier consul bat en retraite devant les Autrichiens, Desaix parvient à temps, avec la division Boudet, dans la plaine de Marengo pour provoquer un dénouement bien connu quant à son résultat final et ses conséquences, moins pour son déroulement et ses circonstances. Il est l’organisateur du succès de San Giuliano qui sauve Bonaparte de la roche Tarpéienne et le propulse vers le Consulat à vie. Le souvenir de cette cruciale journée, où Desaix perd la vie, a longtemps embarrassé le principal bénéficiaire. Bonaparte, pour payer le tribut d’estime qu’il doit, s’évertue à rendre encore plus dramatique et héroïque la mort de son lieutenant ; mais en même temps, le Premier consul n’hésite pas à spolier Desaix des mérites de la victoire pour se les attribuer, en tentant de donner une version de la bataille plus conforme à son statut de génie militaire infaillible.
