Plus de 150 élèves de l’école primaire Jardin-des-Lacs de Saint-Denis-de-Brompton sont devenus des « brigadiers de la nature » en participant, le soir du 5 mai 1999, à un important projet de sensibilisation consistant à aider les grenouilles et les salamandres à traverser la route 220 qui longe et traverse un marais. Des pompiers et des policiers étaient sur place pour interdire la route aux automobilistes, pendant de courts intervalles durant lesquels les jeunes en profitaient pour faire traverser les grenouilles à l’aide d’une épuisette. Ce projet, médiatisé à travers le Canada, a permis de sensibiliser la population à la biodiversité du marais du lac Brompton et à l’importance de protéger les amphibiens. L’année suivante, l’Association pour la protection du lac Brompton inaugurait 3 tunnels permettant le passage sécuritaire des amphibiens sous la route, une première au Canada. La construction de ce genre de tunnel nécessite une étude préalable afin de déterminer le nombre d’individus et d’espèces à protéger et d’obtenir des détails sur leurs déplacements. Plusieurs critères doivent être respectés pour la construction d’un tunnel. Le choix des matériaux et le design sont particulièrement importants pour que l’air, la lumière ambiante et l’humidité puissent pénétrer à l’intérieur du tunnel. Des barrières de déviation sont également requises pour diriger les amphibiens dans les entrées du tunnel situées de chaque côté de la route.
