Abstract
Cet article souligne l’importance de restituer les modalités endogènes de participation dans une société africaine comme le Sénégal qui ne sont pas solubles dans les dispositifs participatifs mis en place par les bailleurs internationaux. En retraçant la grande variété des pratiques de participation politique de jeunes musulmans d’obédience soufie menés par Cheikh Bethio Thioune, un chef religieux charismatique controversé, il s’agit de questionner l’existence d’un « impératif religieux » qui explique le continuum de participation entre espaces du religieux et du politique au sein desquels le groupe évolue. L’engagement dans l’espace public de ces jeunes disciples sur la recommandation de leur chef religieux, favorise paradoxalement la requalification de la leur participation en engagement citoyen.
