Abstract
Cet article se penche sur les causes des différentes trajectoires des régimes politiques dans les pays postcommunistes. J’avance la thèse que les groupes d’explication principaux – l’héritage, le choix institutionnel, la direction politique et l’influence externe – ne sont pas capables seuls d’expliquer toutes les trajectoires possibles pour toutes les sous-périodes de transition politique. Sur ce point, je propose un modèle explicatif multivariable souple à deux niveaux. Ainsi, les trajectoires démocratique et autoritaire s’expliquent principalement à l’aide du système proportionnel aux élections parlementaires. L’explication de la présence des régimes intermédiaires se trouve dans le manque d’identité nationale commune qui unit le gouvernement au reste de la population.
