Abstract
Le livre posthume de Louis-René des Forêts, Pas à pas jusqu’au dernier, composé de fragments réunis et révisés par l’auteur peu avant sa mort, apparaît d’abord comme un testament extrêmement lucide destiné aux êtres « animés » que sont le langage et la mémoire, mais aussi, il montre avec une exigence qui ne tolère aucune pudeur la recherche d’une voix qui, au fond, n’aura jamais été la sienne. Ce moment rare chez l’écrivain, vécu en sachant la mort imminente, s’est écrit, nous semble-t-il, dans un élan presque déjà rétrospectif. En « s’accordant les bienfaits que procure la perspective de la mort », des Forêts a joué contre la linéarité classique du temps, mais en la suivant, pour ainsi dire, pas à pas. L’auteur, et ce sera le soupçon qui guidera notre lecture, aura tenté jusqu’à la fin de saisir non seulement le dernier instant, qui le ferait entrer dans le neutre de la mort, mais également de conjurer l’impossibilité de l’ après-dernier instant, dans lequel sa voix coïnciderait avec ce qui le presse tant d’accueillir : la grande voix du monde.
