CD-ROM Simulation Training in Perceptual, Conceptual, and Executive Skills in Family Therapy—A Metaframeworks Approach

Abstract
This paper describes a CD-ROM interactive multimedia training program designed by the authors to teach perceptual/conceptual and executive skills in marriage and family therapy (MFT), based on the Metaframeworks model of family systems. The authors describe the conceptual model of Metaframeworks from which the technology was designed, the assumptions regarding learning of therapeutic skills used to inform the program's development, the assumptions that were followed regarding the application of technology to the training model, and strategies for using the current multimedia program in training psychotherapists. Implications for future development of the use of a case study approach and other technologies in training and understanding the learning process in psychotherapy are discussed, as well as the technology's expansion for use with other models of therapy. The authors also offer several limitations of the use of computer technology in teaching psychotherapy skills.
