RésuméAlors que le concept d’école afrocentrique est nouveau au Canada, il fait partie de l’univers éducatif américain depuis quelque temps. Ses partisans déclarent que non seulement ces écoles améliorent le niveau scolaire des élèves noirs mais qu’elles leur procurent aussi des figures de référence et une estime de soi. Pour leurs adversaires, ces écoles conduisent à la ségrégation raciale et violent les fondements même du combat pour les droits civiques des années soixante. On avance que le plaidoyer en faveur des écoles afrocentriques ne fera qu’augmenter et se renforcer, sauf si la société et ses acteurs, en particulier les enseignants, s’engagent dans la voie de la vérité en matière d’éducation et intègrent dans les programmes scolaires la réalité historique et actuelle des Canadiens noirs.
