Abstract
En décembre 1945, le père dominicain Georges-Henri Lévesque publie dans Ensemble un article afin d’expliquer le principe de la non-confessionnalité promu par le Conseil supérieur de la coopération depuis 1940. Loin de passer inaperçue, cette clarification soulève une vive polémique au sein du clergé catholique canadien-français au cours de l’hiver 1946. L’École sociale populaire et certains membres de l’épiscopat voient dans la non-confessionnalité une porte ouverte sur la neutralité religieuse. Pressant leurs pairs de s’adapter au contexte changeant du Québec moderne, Lévesque et son supérieur, Pie-Marie Gaudrault, affirment quant à eux la nécessité de désengager l’Église de certains secteurs d’activité socio-économiques. Ainsi, sous son vernis théologique, le débat met en jeu les tenants de deux paradigmes concurrents luttant pour la définition légitime de la nature et du rôle de l’Église catholique dans la modernité canadienne-française.
