En s’appuyant sur la relecture d’une série d’approches relatives à l’émergence des districts industriels dans les pays périphériques, l’objectif de cet article est de proposer une analyse de la trajectoire de l’île Maurice, tout en s’interrogeant sur l’évolution de la performance de ses entreprises. Créé dans une zone franche, le système productif mauricien, fortement spécialisé dans l’activité textile et ouvert à l’économie internationale, s’est longtemps appuyé sur une compétitivité par les prix liée aux faibles coûts de la main-d’œuvre. Les années 1990 témoignent du début d’un processus de complexification de ce système avec une recherche progressive d’une compétitivité par l’innovation, qui en fait un véritable district industriel.
