Abstract
La médiation renvoie à un rapport de réciprocité entre des parties opposées qui, par ailleurs, peuvent en arriver à un marché, à une entente selon certaines conditions. Il en va ainsi entre les représentations chrétiennes, dans ce qu’elles ont d’extraordinaire, et l’histoire avec son cortège de contraintes axées sur la reproduction sociale, soit dans l’ordre de l’ordinaire. Parmi les modalités possibles, ces représentations arrivent à marquer la vie en société en se liant avec des institutions. Les tensions entre les instances en cause ne disparaissent pas pour autant. Bien plus, l’institution des origines ne cesse de provoquer des conflits à l’intérieur même des Églises, qui, elles, appuient leur identité sur un texte fondateur susceptible de donner lieu à leur remise en question. D’où les différenciations dans les figures historiques du christianisme. Chacune entend affirmer une différence socioreligieuse dans la société et y exercer quelque influence, entre l’intransigeance et le compromis. Les modalités de l’entreprise s’avèrent complexes, comme en ce qui concerne les rapports du catholicisme avec la modernité.
