Abstract
Cet article veut jeter un éclairage nouveau sur le rôle assimilateur du milieu urbain pour les minorités linguistiques, à la lumière des plus récentes données du recensement canadien. L'idée de la ville comme « machine à assimiler » est ici remise en question. À l'aide d'un cadre méthodologique approprié, permettant de tenir compte de l'évolution des structures démographiques selon l'âge, notre étude essaie de tracer un portrait de l'évolution du comportement linguistique des minorités francophones hors Québec durant la période 1971-1996. Ce portrait s'est fait en utilisant une approche comparative distinguant deux types de milieu, le milieu métropolitain et le milieu non métropolitain, pour essayer de voir si les tendances permettent de revoir le rôle joué par le milieu urbain. Les résultats obtenus, sans totalement confirmer cette remise en question du rôle assimilateur du milieu urbain, montrent toutefois qu'il y a encore de l'espoir pour les communautés francophones hors Québec en voie d'urbanisation et de métropolisation.
