Abstract
As a native Cuban intensive care doctor, I felt many parts of my life were not mine to control. Having free health and education systems does not make you free. Cuban security forces control many aspects of life, as a colleague and I discovered when we tried to publicise some research about the extent of a local epidemic of dengue fever. We were told to stop or face imprisonment because it showed the country in a bad light.
