Abstract
This volume contains eighteen articles, arranged by three strictly related topics: papers about Sībawayhi's Kitāb, other grammarians and related disciplines, and finally Arabic grammatical theory. Given that the papers, selected for the Variorum, span nearly a quarter of a century from 1979 to 2001, their great coherence, both methodological and thematic, is striking, so too is their impressively high scholarly standard. Below I will give a brief survey of each paper, in the chronological order of their original publication, rather than the order they appear in the volume. Chapter II: ‘Some Aspects of Harmony and Hierarchy in Sībawayhi's Grammatical Analysis’ (1979) touches on the much-discussed problem as to whether the first Arab grammarian should be characterized as being descriptive or prescriptive in his methods.
