Cet article traite de la nécessité du retour de l'histoire politique dans l'historiographie québécoise. Il en montre des conditions puis des étapes parmi d'autres et tente d'en cerner quelques limites comme quelques possibilités, sans prétendre à l'exhaustivité. Centré sur une meilleure compréhension de la notion même du politique et des tensions internes à la discipline telles qu'elles se sont profilées au Québec depuis la fin des années 1960, il soutient que ce retour ne peut s'effectuer que sur les bases indispensables de la revalorisation de l'histoire politique traditionnelle, ouverte à de nouveaux objets et à de nouvelles approches, et de la relégitimation de l'objet politique. Pour faire ressortir ce point de vue, il analyse avec franchise quelques aspects de la pratique des historiens de l'histoire politique et de celle des historiens des autres domaines. Ce faisant, il constate, déplore et explique l'isolement dont a souffert et souffre encore aujourd'hui la première. Il invite, enfin, dans le respect de tous, au dialogue entre les champs de la discipline afin de promouvoir la réintégration de l'histoire politique dans l'explication historique. Cela étant, s'esquissera le profil de la place renouvelée que pourrait occuper l'histoire politique dans la pratique historienne d'aujourd'hui.
