La pragmatique poétique s'applique à dégager d'un texte un ensemble de procédures visant à satisfaire les conditions de réussite de la communication poétique. L'auteur compare ici les stratégies interactives de quatre textes poétiques choisis pour leurs différences formelles : « À une passante » de Baudelaire, « Apparition » de Mallarmé, « Being Beauteous » de Rimbaud et « Poème de séparation 2 » de Gaston Miron. Il apparaît que le titre et les thèmes de chaque texte peuvent indifféremment être appliqués aux trois autres, ce qui permet de ne s'arrêter qu'aux énoncés réalisés chacun dans son contexte, pour chercher à définir comment la lecture, dans sa démarche interprétative, à l'égal de l'écriture, est cocréatrice de l'énonciation.
