Abstract

Sainsbury's recently completed millennium store on the Greenwich peninsula sets out to redefine supermarkets both in terms of environmental performance and appearance. Its low energy design features—such as a naturally lit sales floor, passive ventilation, combined heat and power plant and groundwater cooling system—help to deliver a building that uses up to 50% less energy than a similar-sized conventional store.This paper describes how civil and structural engineers contributed to this ground-breaking project by adapting both modern and historic structural solutions to develop, design and construct what should set a new benchmark for environmentally friendly and sustainable construction.
