Au Mali, entre Djenné, Mopti et Tombouctou, s’étend une vaste zone inondable : le delta intérieur du fleuve Niger. Un million de personnes vivent dans ce territoire d’environ 35 000 km2. Pêcheurs, éleveurs et agriculteurs exploitent tour à tour eaux et terres pour consommer et exporter les ressources du Delta. Une organisation sociale sophistiquée assure le chassé-croisé des uns et des autres en fonction de la hauteur de la crue. Mais si le milieu bouge de façon cyclique au cours de l’année, il bouge aussi sur deux axes plus linéaires, intimement liés : celui de la dégradation du milieu naturel dû aux aléas climatiques et au fait de l’homme, celui des changements socio-économiques locaux, régionaux et mondiaux. Changements aux multiples effets sur l’équilibre homme-nature, changements auxquels l’homme doit s’adapter mais qu’il se doit aussi de limiter et de gérer.L’article aborde l’organisation humaine ‘traditionnelle’ sous un angle à la fois historique et sociologique puis présente une analyse des changements naturels et humains qui s’opèrent dans le delta, et enfin situe présente les problématiques de développement et le rôle de la recherche scientifique dans l’appui à une gestion intégrée et efficace du delta dans l’avenir.
