Abstract
Sans connaître les relations entre les questions des recensements au Canada et aux Etats-Unis sur la langue maternelle, nous avons distribué un questionnaire à 221 résidents de l’état de New-York (région de Plattsburg). Nos conclusions principales sont les suivantes : 1) La formulation de la question canadienne a une portée plus restrictive que celle américaine. Ainsi 60 pourcent des personnes dont la langue maternelle est non-anglophone au recensement américain seraient classées de langue maternelle anglaise d’après le recensement canadien. 2) Plusieurs questions sur l’historique linguistique des parents sont nécessaires au chercheur afin de mieux saisir le caractère pluridimensionnel de la réalité linguistique. 3) L’exogamie linguistique joue un rôle capital dans l’anglicisation des minorités linguistiques de cette région. Si on utilise plutôt la définition canadienne de la langue maternelle, les données montrent que les minorités linguistiques aux Etats-Unis réussiraient à mieux conserver leur langue que celles du Canada.
