Abstract
Cet article s ’ efforce de prendre la mesure de l ’ impact du cartésianismedans les transformations du concept d ’ imagination à la fin du XVII e siècle en prenant pourpoints d ’ ancrage les développements consacrés à cette notion chez Malebranche et Fontenelle. Ces deux penseurs accentuent des polarités qui sont présentes dans la conceptioncartésienne de l ’ imagination : Malebranche fait fond sur la notion d ’ imagination passivepour en faire le pivot d ’ une théorie de la contagion des affects et des représentations, alorsque Fontenelle mobilise celle d ’ imagination active pour élaborer son histoire de l ’ esprithumain. Tous deux, à terme, font de l ’ imagination une notion centrale dans la formationd ’ un proto-concept de « culture ».
