Abstract
The theological reflection of a pastorally engaged theologian puts into proper perspective the theological debates between priorities given to either Gospel or Culture, or in another theological key, between deductive and inductive theological approaches. Professor Emeritus, Carl F. Starkloff, S.J., of Regis College of the Toronto School of Theology, models the joining of the pastoral and academic in his theological work. His writing and teaching were given direction by a significant pastoral issue and, at the same time, over his career he has attended carefully to the thought of major figures within the academic disciplines. While working as a recently ordained Catholic priest and pastor on a reservation in the United States, he experienced directly the pain that the attitudes of some Catholic missionaries caused among native people. He discovered that native people were deeply troubled by the lack of appreciation given their traditional ways and spiritual practices. This moved Starkloff to make what became a life-long commitment.
