Abstract

A simple ionic azo-dye polyelectrolyte complex, free of flexible spacer and tail, was prepared from two readily available components. It possesses smectic A order from subambient to degradation (above 230 °C) and provides exceptional photoinduced birefringence (PIB) properties, competitive with if not superior to those of previously reported all-covalent azo polymers.
