Abstract
L'œuvre de Marcel Gauchet constitue un des plus remarquables efforts contemporains de compréhension systématique du fait religieux. Au croisement de plusieurs disciplines, elle gagne toutefois à être lue dans la continuité de la philosophie politique, qui a toujours vu la religion comme un objet d'interrogation privilégié. Notre analyse développe cette intuition sur trois plans distincts. Il s'agit d'abord de voir comment Gauchet radicalise l'analyse du religieux développée par la pensée politique moderne. Nous confrontons notamment ici son approche avec celle de Tocqueville, dont Gauchet est à la fois l'héritier et le critique. Une deuxième partie montre comment son analyse historique et sociale s'appuie sur une réflexion fondamentale qui distingue la religion, comme forme historique, de son substrat anthropologique. Nous visons enfin à faire ressortir l'intérêt et les difficultés d'une telle distinction pour penser la modernité.
