Accelerated boundary layers are considered to be stable for practical purposes. It is shown that small suction nonuniformitiescaninduceaninstabilitythatresultsinthegenerationofstreamwisevortices.Additionofauniform suctionisnoteffectiveincontrollingthisinstability.Itisshownthatnonuniformitiesofsurfaceblowingmightinduce a similar instability and that the characteristics of this instability are also little affected by the magnitude of the blowing. The same nonuniformities appear to have a small effect on the traveling (Tollmien‐Schlichting ) wave instability in the range of parameters studied.
