Abstract
Former une union, avoir un enfant, connaître une séparation constituent des moments clés de la vie des femmes. La rupture d'une union n'est jamais chose facile mais les conséquences sont nettement plus lourdes lorsqu'elle met en jeu des enfants. Pour cette raison, le présent article s'intéresse à l'issue des premières unions fécondes conclues par diverses générations de Canadiennes, en prenant la naissance du premier enfant comme point de départ de la trajectoire familiale. Après avoir documenté l'évolution des modalités de formation des familles en fonction du cheminement conjugal suivi, oncherchera à vérifier jusqu'à quel point les changements observés influencent les chances des femmes de vivre une rupture d'union et de connaître la monoparentalité. Ce faisant, on tentera de dégager certaines indications sur le sens que revêt dorénavant l'union libre et sur l'avenir des familles biparentales.
