Abstract
Il est devenu commun d’interpréter les épîtres dédicatoires, et plus généralement les textes d’éloge des grands, à la lumière des relations clientélaires qui subordonnent les écrivains à leurs « patrons » : même l’échange mécénique est interprété comme un échange où les deux protagonistes engagent un intérêt socioéconomique qui réduit la liberté de parole de l’écrivain. La littérature est, dans cette perspective, définie comme un bien sans valeur publique particulière, mobilisé dans des rapports de force et des stratégies sociales. On se propose ici de relire la relation de l’écrivain à son mécène, et, au-delà, à son public, à la lumière de la distinction opérée par les anthropologues entre objet marchand, objet de don et objet sacré.
