Abstract
Les Éditions Maspero, créées à Paris en 1959, fournissent un exemple particulièrement intéressant de la tension très forte qui peut exister entre, d’un côté, un objectif éditorial politique, en l’occurrence anticapitaliste, et, de l’autre, le goût personnel de l’éditeur, François Maspero, pour les dimensions les plus matérielles et « esthétiques » de l’édition. Le décalage entre le contenu des livres et leur habillage visuel fournit une clé pour comprendre la conception de l’édition politique de François Maspero, tout en mettant au jour les contradictions de ce dernier et, peut-être, les contradictions de toute édition politique : le livre politique puise sa légitimité à des sources qui ne sont pas directement politiques. En examinant en particulier le cas de la collection de littérature « Voix », cet article montre comment la présence simultanée d’un goût pour la « pure » typographie et d’une mission politique forte pouvait seulement fonctionner dans la référence à un modèle artisanal d’édition, à l’opposé d’un modèle industriel et capitaliste.
