Abstract
Le projectionniste ambulant William Shaw, qui a sillonné pendant plus de 30 ans la région des Cantons-de-l’Est, devient dans cette étude le riche cas d’espèce d’une étude plus large des projections ambulantes et des rapports entre le monde rural et urbain autour du cinéma des premiers temps. La ville est alors un lieu de sédentarisation pour les exploitants et un lieu d’arrêt pour les projectionnistes ambulants, tandis que la foire agricole joue le rôle d’interface entre la ville et la campagne et devient le lieu de rencontre privilégié avec le cinéma. Au cours de l’histoire, les projections ambulantes développent des pratiques particulières de plus en plus en décalage avec les pratiques urbaines. Le cas le plus flagrant est la permanence de la projection muette alors que le cinéma devient parlant.
