Abstract
Résumé Le renversement sémantique qui fait passer le mot métis d’insulte à symbole d’une société multiculturelle et fraternelle, s’est effectué en moins d’un siècle et pour le comprendre, il faut sans doute effectuer un retour sur le passé, en essayant de tisser des liens de sens entre l’histoire de l’espace colonial et la complexité des histoires individuelles. Ainsi, pour l’Indochine coloniale, le métissage pose un problème juridique, humain, social et politique. Juridique, car l’organisation de la colonie, fondée sur le code de l’indigénat, n’admet que deux statuts : celui de citoyen ou celui d’indigène. Les métis se situent dans un entre deux contradictoire. La réalité des métis en Indochine est complexe : la diversité des biographies familiales laisse entrevoir des stratégies différenciées et des destins contrastés.
