Abstract
In bold letters, staring out of the page of a recent New York Times Sunday Business Section, is the headline “The Drexel Diaspora.” The so-called diaspora named in this story concerns the acolytes of once disgraced, now rehabilitated, investment-bank Drexel Burnham Lambert’s legendary junkbond trader Michael R. Miliken, whose high-risk and illegal activities led the company into bankruptcy fifteen years ago. Miliken went to jail, while his innocent devotees were “swept up in the Drexel diaspora,” that is, scattered across the financial landscape, fending for themselves (Anderson; emphasis added). Today, in early 2005, they have all landed on their feet in good jobs on Wall Street, while Miliken, since his conviction barred him for life from the stock market business, has relocated to Los Angeles and reinvented himself as a philanthropist.
