Abstract
Au XIXe siècle et au début du siècle suivant, le clergé québécois combat le théâtre dans son ensemble. Pour ce qui concerne le théâtre lyrique, que ce soit le genre sérieux comme l’opéra ou le répertoire plus populaire comme l’opérette, il subit lui aussi les foudres des évêques de Montréal. D’une condamnation générale à l’époque de Mgr Ignace Bourget, la répression épiscopale évoluera vers la mise au ban d’oeuvres bien précises sous Mgr Paul Bruchési. Impuissante à détourner les fidèles des théâtres, en dépit de fréquentes et énergiques dénonciations, l’Église agira plus efficacement sur les décideurs et les pouvoirs publics, ce qui lui permettra d’enregistrer quelques victoires intéressantes. Cependant, l’unanimité autour de l’Église catholique a du plomb dans l’aile, puisque les fidèles, et même une certaine portion du clergé, bravent ses interdits.
