Madeinusa (2006) y La teta asustada (2009), los dos primeros films de la directora peruana Claudia Llosa, presentan una perspectiva renovada de las comunidades andinas del Perú basada en una dicotomía entre la continuidad y el cambio de su cultura. Aunque es cierto que Llosa retrata a unos miembros de estas comunidades como individuos fuertes que resisten a la influencia cultural urbana de Lima, también demuestra que otros luchan por desarrollar una identidad andina propia, a la vez enriquecida por la cultura andina y la apropiación de características sociales de la capital. Madeinusa y Fausta, las protagonistas de Madeinusa y La teta asustada, son las que más luchan por equilibrar esta dicotomía al enfrentarse tanto a la visión de sus comunidades como a la hegemonía limeña.
