Abstract
Les théories de la communication portent principalement leur attention sur les accords intersubjectifs relatifs au sens, à la règle, au code. Cet article adopte le point de vue opposé et postule que l'échange symbolique repose en premier lieu sur trois libertés virtuelles au regard de l'usage du signe : la transgression des conventions et des attentes, la possibilité de cacher ou de montrer ses états mentaux et, enfin, la possibilité de métamorphoser ses représentations. Ces trois libertés définissent un espace de réversibilité virtuelle qui constitue une source endogène importante et continue de transformation des codes et des formes sociales. L'histoire ne se présente pas comme une succession d'ententes intersubjectives souveraines, mais plutôt comme une régulation après coup d'une désertion, d'une transgression ou d'un rejet des anciennes conventions, attentes ou régularités.
