Au-delà des options esthétiques qui les différencient, les compagnies et les spectacles de cirque contemporain possèdent des caractéristiques dramaturgiques communes, qui dépassent la simple théâtralité. Cette dramaturgie, signe d’une démarche artistique, est fondée sur la cohérence fragmentaire du spectacle, le travail d’une équipe et l’introduction d’un metteur en piste, parfois collectif, pour coordonner l’ensemble. Le cirque réfléchit sur lui-même, soit en citant ses origines, soit en opérant une transformation et une réévaluation de ses éléments fondateurs : éléments thématiques (l’itinérance, la monstruosité) réintroduits au sein du spectacle; éléments idéologiques, comme l’interrogation de la norme physique ou sociale; éléments structurels, comme le chapiteau ou le cercle. La prouesse, fondement même du cirque, se voit ainsi à la fois exhibée et tournée en dérision dans le même geste.
