Abstract
Les repères spatiaux de la société contemporaine diffèrent considérablement de ceux des siècles précédents, voire de ceux de la première moitié du XXe siècle. Ce changement nous force à repenser la notion de « région », l’un des concepts fondamentaux que l’on retrouve au coeur de tout débat sur l’État-nation canadien. Le concept de région avait autrefois permis aux Canadiens d’accepter les différences physiques, culturelles et historiques de leur pays et d’appréhender leur société comme un tout convenable et solide. La modification de la structure des échanges commerciaux, les tendances migratoires mondiales et les communications électroniques ont créé un nouveau contexte qui rend nécessaire la révision du concept de région si l’on souhaite s’en servir comme pilier de l’État-nation contemporain. L’article ci-dessous propose de laisser tomber l’approche uniformisée et de recourir plutôt à trois concepts régionaux au lieu d’un seul. Les régions dénotées, instituées et imaginées tiennent compte du changement social, des négociations et des facteurs impondérables, des éléments indispensables à toute analyse spatiale de l’histoire du Canada.
