Crises in fisheries around the world have made everyone realize that the health of ocean ecosystems cannot be taken for granted. In this article I discuss the science and policy of marine sanctuaries by examining the case of Atlantic Canada. By providing fishing-free sanctuaries for marine biodiversity, the richness of life in Canada's oceans be retained and healthy fisheries will also be promoted. The protection of deep-sea coral communities from mobile fishing gears is presented as an example. Marine sanctuaries can be created under the provisions of existing laws in Canada. The Oceans Act, for example, permits the creation of “marine protected areas.” The benefits of marine protected areas are discussed, and plans for developing systems of marine protected areas are outlined.
