Abstract
Le modèle de reproduction familiale de type pyrénéen n'est pas apte à rendre compte de la réalité nord-américaine dans sa phase d'expansion, caractérisée par l'abondance des terres et par une croissance démographique rapide. Un échantillon de familles saguenéennes, tiré du fichier informatisé de la population du Saguenay, permet de valider un contre-modèle de transmission du patrimoine pour la période 1842-1911. Portant sur une période d'observation de plus de trente ans à compter du mariage des parents, les données confirment que les familles visent moins à préserver le patrimoine qu'à établir un maximum d'enfants et que la mobilité est un élément essentiel dans cette stratégie de reproduction familiale. Les résultats mettent en évidence la nécessité d'une perspective historique et comparative dans l'étude de la famille rurale québécoise, ainsi que l'insuffisance du cadre paroissial pour la prise en compte du phénomène de la mobilité.
