La Seconde Guerre mondiale a été une expérience « totale » de façon infamante, le Canada n’y ayant pas fait exception. Bien qu’il ait été considéré comme un partenaire subalterne, le Canada a apporté une contribution substantielle à l’effort de guerre des Alliés proportionnellement à sa population. Cette contribution est l’élément le mieux connu au sujet du rôle du Canada dans la guerre. Ce qui est moins connu, c’est l’expérience canadienne de la guerre en elle-même. À vrai dire, le Canada est entré dans le conflit de manière typiquement canadienne, avec hésitation, tiraillé sur la question de sa propre identité, mais, en définitive, poussé vers l’avant par des événements plus importants et des partenaires plus puissants. Cette expérience a touché les points les plus sensibles de l’unité nationale canadienne. La guerre s’est avérée une expérience importante pour le Canada en tant qu’État, et ce, au-delà des événements qui sont habituellement retracés dans la littérature sur l’histoire militaire de ce pays.
