Cette étude exploratoire tente de mettre en lumière les effets de l’augmentation de la diversité ethnoculturelle dans les assemblées élues. À partir d’entrevues en profondeur menées avec des élus municipaux de Montréal issus des groupes ethniques minoritaires, l’auteure analyse leurs opinions regroupées autour de ces questions : 1. Que pensent les élus rencontrés du jeu politique au niveau municipal ? Du fait de leur origine minoritaire, se sentent-ils marginalisés, voire discriminés ? 2. Quel est l’apport des élus ethniques à la façon d’aborder les enjeux sociaux et politiques ? Ajoutent-ils une perspective nouvelle à l’analyse des problèmes et à la recherche de solutions ? Servant de fils conducteurs à l’étude des opinions colligées, ces questions débouchent sur la proposition de nouvelles avenues pour l’examen de la représentation politique des groupes ethnoculturels au Canada. En conclusion, l’auteure discute de l’idée d’envisager l’angle de la « normalisation », de la « désethnicisation » ou encore de l’« intégration politique » pour étudier la capacité des systèmes politiques à s’ouvrir à de nouvelles couches de la population.
