Abstract
Cet article porte sur la relation entre célibat et installation dans les zones rurales françaises. Il cherche à savoir si l’on peut expliquer la baisse des installations par des facteurs matrimoniaux et, plus particulièrement, le fort taux de célibat des jeunes agriculteurs. Il soutient que les politiques d’installation n’ont pas eu les effets escomptés parce qu’elles n’ont pas tenu compte de la difficulté pour un agriculteur de trouver une relation sentimentale stable. À l’aide d’une étude statistique de données du recensement de la population et d’un sondage réalisé auprès de 588 agriculteurs, les auteurs montrent que le célibat masculin explique mieux que le revenu la baisse des installations en agriculture et qu’il est – pour des raisons de perception subjective – sous-estimé aussi bien par les syndicats d’agriculteurs que par les pouvoirs publics.
