Dans la mouvance de l’intérêt nouveau suscité par l’histoire longtemps refoulée des protestants francophones du Québec, on veut montrer de quelle manière deux communautés, fondées dans la première moitié du XX e siècle, ont eu à négocier différemment leur place au soleil de l’identité. Dans les deux cas un groupe de catholiques passe au protestantisme parce qu’il s’oppose au lieu choisi par le curé et l’évêque pour construire la nouvelle église. À Saint-Damase-de-L’Islet, sur la Côte-du-Sud, la naissance de la communauté se fait sans heurt majeur apparent tandis qu’à Girardville, dans le Lac-Saint-Jean, la rupture conduit à l’affrontement «musclé».
