En renouant les fils de l'histoire, l'autrice situe l'origine de la tradition de l'enseignement technique masculin en Belgique, dans l'enseignement industriel du XIXe siècle et sa figure emblématique de l'ouvrier-technicien. Elle montre comment, durant l'entre-deux-guerres, cette tradition donne sa cohérence éducative et structurelle à une filière unifiée d'enseignement technique de jour. Après 1945, la Belgique, comme d'autres pays européens, a mis en chantier un enseignement secondaire intégré au sein duquel, progressivement, l'identité positive forte issue de la tradition de l'enseignement technique masculin s'est en quelque sorte dissoute. La perspective sociohistorique qui guide l'article enrichit notre compréhension du terreau structurel et culturel dans lequel prennent racine les différents projets élaborés au fil du temps pour l'enseignement technique et professionnel. Finalement, nous sommes conduits à nous interroger au sujet des figures emblématiques et des valeurs porteuses pour l'avenir de cet enseignement, en quête d'une nouvelle identité.
