Abstract
On interroge ici la théorie des « grands espaces » de Carl Schmitt. En quoi cette théorie de l’équilibre des puissances est-elle une théorie « juridique » ? En quoi est-elle effectivement une théorie de l’« équilibre » ? On essaie d’affronter le paradoxe qui veut que le texte dans lequel Schmitt développe une théorie de la mesure politique ait eu aussi pour fonction de justifier la politique expansionniste sans limite du iii e Reich. On met en rapport les ambiguïtés qui pèsent sur cette théorie avec la position spécifique de Schmitt dans la science du droit : la récusation simultanée du normativisme et de l’empirisme, qui le met en porte-à-faux à la fois avec les juristes et les théoriciens des « relations internationales ».
