Si l’acrobatie aérienne occupe dès l’Antiquité une place de choix au cirque, elle connaît depuis une vingtaine d’années un essor remarquable. L’invention de nouveaux appareils permet la création d’images étonnantes dans le ciel du cirque. Grâce aux recherches développées dans les milieux universitaires, l’acrobatie aérienne s’inspire de la biomécanique sportive et bénéficie des compétences d’entraîneurs pour former des athlètes de haut niveau. La théâtralité est souvent exploitée par les artistes du cirque. Quelles en sont les manifestations dans l’acrobatie aérienne? À travers quelques personnages connus et la dramatisation du risque, il sera question de la dimension théâtrale dans l’aérien contemporain et de sa « lecture » par le spectateur. L’article comprend un glossaire de termes techniques.
