Abstract
L'hypothèse du staple a joué un rôle de premier plan dans l'interprétation de l'histoire économique du Canada. Suivant cette hypothèse, le développement économique d'un pays neuf résulte deseffets d'entraînement créés par l'exportation d'un produit de base ( staple). Or, le commerce du bois équarri, et la construction navale qu'il a suscitée, ont fait la fortune du port de Québec au XIXe siècle. Le déclin rapide de ces activités a laissé l'économie locale en panne. La reconversion qui suivit échappe au modèle dérivé de l'hypothèse du staple. Une approche d'inspiration keynésienne et fondée sur l'analyse des espaces économiques serait plus adéquate.
