The purposes of this study were to determine if experienced cyclists self-select lactate steady state (LSS) during a simulated 20km time trial (TT) and if the attainment of LSS was associated with consistent pacing. Twelve experienced cyclists performed the TT on a computerized trainer system. Compared to values at 7.5km, lactate was significantly lower at 17.5km, and PO was reduced at 15 and 17.5km. Variability in lactate and variability in power output, as measured by intrasubject standard deviation, were highly correlated (r = 0.75, p <0.01) from 5km onward. Only 2 of 12 subjects met the previously published criteria for LSS (< 1.0mmol·L−1 change during exercise), and these subjects had the lowest variability in power output. Self-selection of a consistent pace was associated with the attainment of LSS; however, the majority of experienced cyclists did not self-select lactate steady state during a 20km simulated cycle race.
