Abstract
The Stockholm based European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has launched a campaign to alert hospitals to the prudent use of antibiotics at the same time as it has confirmed 77 cases of a new multidrug resistant “superbug” from India. The centre pointed out that every year up to 400 000 patients across the European Union are infected by organisms that are resistant to several antibiotics. An emerging trend in Klebsiella pneumoniae , a common cause of infection, is the proportion of resistance to powerful last line antibiotics such as carbapenems.
