Abstract
À partir d’entrevues réalisées par le professeur Yves Vaillancourt et son équipe, cette note de recherche porte sur l’évolution des pratiques des agences sociales montréalaises. Après une esquisse du contexte dans lequel se réorganise l’assistance et les services sociaux dans les communautés juive et anglo-protestante avant la crise des années 1930, l’analyse se concentre sur les agences catholiques, toutes canadiennes-françaises sauf une. Sont ainsi présentés le foisonnement de ces agences, la diversité de leurs approches, les divergences de vues entre leurs dirigeants et les tensions qui en résultent. Bien que les données manquent encore pour l’affirmer de manière concluante, l’analyse conduit par ailleurs à remarquer que dans les années 1930 comme au tournant des années 1970, les communautés juive et anglophone de Montréal ont su obtenir du gouvernement que les objectifs de l’État québécois ne remettent pas en cause la primauté des structures ethno-linguistiques et confessionnelles qu’elles se sont données.
