Abstract
Après la mort du président Franjo Tudjman et la victoire électorale de l'opposition politique en Croatie et en République fédérale de Yougoslavie (RFY), ces pays amorcent une ouverture décisive envers l'Europe occidentale. Cependant, les relations entre la Croatie et la RFY demeureront difficiles. En dépit des déclarations encourageantes du nouveau président de la RFY, Vojislav Kostunica, et du président de la Croatie, Stipe Mesic, de vouloir normaliser complètement les relations entre les deux pays, de nombreux obstacles interdisent pour le moment une coopération accrue entre les deux États. Les impacts dramatiques de la guerre serbo-croate (1991-1995) sont encore trop présents dans la mémoire des Croates pour que cela soit possible. Le sort de nombreux portés disparus demeurant indéfini et les difficultés rencontrées en Slavonie orientale pour le retour des Croates, de même que le contentieux territorial dans la péninsule de Prevlaka, apparaissent comme étant les raisons majeures qui empêchent la réconciliation des deux peuples.
